Welcome to the Nilgiris!

Welcome to the Nilgiris - a special part of India like no other!

The Nilgiris were first settled by the British in 1819, and still retain the old charm of a bygone era.  Ooty, the centre of the Nilgiris, is a popular holiday destination for honeymoon couples and visitors from around the world.

Because of its temperate climate, the Nilgiris also attracts visitors from all over India who escape to the cool Blue Mountains, leaving the sweltering heat of the cities behind them.

The Nilgiris (Tamil : நீலகிரி or literally: Blue Mountains), are often referred to as the Nilgiri Hills, but the area also encompasses plains and valleys.

The Nilgiris have a range of mountains with at least 24 peaks above 2,000 meters, and are in the west of Tamil Nadu on the border of Karnataka and Kerala in Southern India.

The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which includes the Nilgiri Hills, is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
